Palev / Pavel Volykhine was born July 30th 1961, in the southern part of Russia near the Black Sea. He spent much of his childhood listening to classical music on the radio, teaching himself to draw and make toys for himself and younger brother Ilya. At the time, life in Russia was unable to provide very much, forcing Pavel  to find beauty and amazement in the smallest of things, as well as an appreciation for what most may take for granted. He soon discovered a passion for music, which carried him through much of his young adult life, providing him the opportunity to travel, and accomplish what was most important to him, the chance to express himself through his music. Soon however, Pavel realized that sadly, his ability to express himself freely was being compromised, because in Russia, it was virtually next to impossible to do. So he decided to give things a try in the United States.
He first came to the United States in 1988, choosing Los Angeles as his new home, he pursued his music career. After years spent writing music and fronting several bands, he decided to move to New York, in hopes of changing directions and trying his hand at writing. It was during this time that in his continued effort to feed his insatiable and undeniable creative side, he picked up a brush, and began to express himself on canvas. The results were startling. What has followed is a series of paintings so unique and vibrant, they almost belie his rough and bleak beginnings. His moods and passions are undeniably evident in every piece. Each painting is an exciting blend of fearlessness and imagination, as well as simplicity and complexity. They invite you in, with their vibrant richness of color and almost lyrical movement, and are as unique and individual as each one of us.
Simply put, Pavel’s lifelong desire and dream, to express himself honestly, was never more evident than it is in his paintings. For in each one of them, one can not only explore his story, but find their own images, feelings and story as well….
